THE SULTAN & THE SAINT CONFERENCE
May 2, 2019 - June 11, 2020
This international conference will be conducted in Baltimore, Maryland in 2019 to shed more light on the historic initiative that took place in 1219 by Saint Francis of Assisi in Italy, who traveled in the midst of the Fifth Crusade, to meet with the Sultan of Egypt, Malik al-Kamil, a nephew of the great Muslim warrior Saladin.
The task of interfaith reconciliation and world healing is fundamentally a spiritual one. The ability of Islam and Christianity to contribute to the healing and peace of the world lies not in their ability to manipulate political, economic or diplomatic power, but in their ability to lead people into the experience of a transforming vision that allowed a Muslim ruler and a Christian saint to envision their world and the relationships of their peoples in a radically new way.
This historic meeting, which contains profound spiritual significance for our era, has long gone underappreciated by both the Muslim and Christian worlds. Christians have failed to appreciate the profound transformation of Francis from the desire to convert, and its Christian-Euro centric worldview, to a radically new appreciation of Muslims and Christians living in mutual harmony and respect. Muslims have failed to appreciate the openness of the Sultan’s reception (based on his Muslim faith) of the Christian holy man, and the Sultan’s willingness to meet Francis on a spiritual level of mutual respect that transcended the attitude of grievance and hostility that shaped the Muslim stance toward Christianity.
Objectives of this two-day conference are: – Highlight the importance of this significant Muslim-Christian meeting – Understand the past challenges faced by the Sultan & the Saint, and consider what challenges the Christian community, Muslim community and interfaith movement are facing today – Generate practical ways in which we can work together, in light of the meeting between the Sultan and the Saint – Discuss what Sultan Malik and Saint Francis would say to the 2019/2020 generation
